Jaume Plensa (1955) is and essential piece of the actual artistic panorama, and one of the Spanish creators with the biggest international projection.
His work, which has been exhibited at the main international contemporary art centres and institutions, combines a exquisite realization of great plastic depth with an astonishing capacity to provoke reflection.
Plensa has opened new artistic ways of experimentation, without giving up inquiry into the elusive territory of beauty.
In fact, he´s one of the contemporary artists that has contributed most to blow up the disciplinary boundaries which separated sculpture, set design, drawing, digital art, printmaking and literature.
Testimony to this are his public artworks disseminated around the world, his participation in some of the most innovative stage designs of recent times and his collaboration with major publishing projects.
In Synonymous perhaps his less known facet, drawing, is collected. In the first place, twenty selected drawings, of fiftytwo, from the Shakespeare (2005) series are presented, created to illustrate the edition of the William Shakespeare theatrical pieces of Galaxy Gutenberg.
With these works, Plensa has not sought so much to “ illustrate” certain works of a great importance to the occidental world, but to build mid-land between plastic work and the Shakesperian literary cosmovision that, on the other hand, has accompanied him during most of his trajectory . Furthermore, Synonymous includes fifteen drawings from the La Ruta de la Seda (2005-2006) series and sixteen drawings titled Anonymous (2003-2004).
